Endemic To / Natural Range
Porcellio dilatatus is native to Europe and Mediterranean regions where it naturally inhabits grasslands, scrublands, rocky environments, and dry woodland areas rich in decaying organic matter. In the wild, this species is commonly found beneath leaf litter, stones, bark, and decomposing wood where pockets of humidity remain available below the surface. Their hardy nature and tolerance for drier conditions make them highly effective bioactive isopods for arid and temperate habitats.
Temperature
- Ideal Range: 72–82°F
- Tolerable Range: 65–90°F
Humidity
- Ideal Humidity: 40–65%
- Prefers a moisture gradient with damp retreat zones and moderate to high ventilation.
- While Porcellio dilatatus tolerates drier conditions better than many bioactive isopods, access to humid microclimates remains essential for proper molting and long-term colony health.
Favorite Foods
Primary food sources: Decaying hardwood leaf litter and decomposing wood, with oak and magnolia leaves being especially beneficial.
Favorite supplemental foods: squash, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, peas, sweet potato, and leafy greens.
Preferred protein sources: Bug Grub, Repashy Morning Wood, Repashy Bug Burger, dried shrimp and krill, fish flakes and Arcadia Custodian Fuel. Due to their strong appetites and large adult size, this species benefits from regular protein supplementation and constant calcium availability through cuttlebone, eggshells, or SoilCal Plus.
Favorite Woods & Botanicals
Cork bark flats, hardwood bark, magnolia leaves, lotus pods, palm leaves, seed pods, and cholla wood provide shelter, grazing surfaces, and supplemental food sources. These botanicals help create stable microhabitats and natural burrowing zones throughout a bioactive terrarium or vivarium.
Best Substrate
For optimal health and long-term colony success, house this species on The Bio Dude's Terra Isopoda Substrate layered over Terra Sahara, Terra Firma, Terra Fauna, or Terra Flora depending on enclosure type. This nutrient-rich bioactive substrate provides proper drainage, microbial activity, aeration, burrowing support, and long-term food availability ideal for arid and temperate bioactive habitats.

How to Help Them Thrive in a Bioactive Habitat
To help Porcellio dilatatus thrive in a bioactive habitat, provide deep substrate layers, abundant leaf litter coverage, cork bark hides, varied botanicals, and a stable moisture gradient throughout the terrarium or vivarium. This species benefits from moderate to high ventilation, access to damp retreat zones, and deeper bioactive substrate areas that support natural burrowing behavior. Due to their large size and strong appetites, Porcellio dilatatus serves as an effective clean-up crew and detritivore for arid and temperate bioactive habitats, especially in enclosures containing larger animals that produce substantial waste. While less protein-driven than some other Porcellio species, regular supplemental feeding still helps support healthy colony growth and reduces competition for resources. Because of their slower reproduction rate and larger size, allowing colonies time to establish before introducing heavy predators is highly recommended. When paired with Bio Dude substrates and botanicals, Porcellio dilatatus establishes into a hardy, reliable bioactive isopod colony ideal for arid terrariums and vivariums. The Bio Dude is happy to offer Isopod Habitat Kits and Isopod Culturing Kits to help your bioactive isopods establish and thrive!
