Dalmatian Isopod Care Sheet
Venezillo parvus
Dalmatian Isopod, Venezillo parvus Isopod
Difficulty level: Intermediate

Endemic To / Natural Range
Venezillo parvus is associated with tropical and subtropical environments where it naturally inhabits humid areas rich in decaying organic matter. In the wild, this species is commonly found beneath leaf litter, decomposing wood, and other moist debris within forested bioactive habitats. Due to their fossorial tendencies, they spend much of their time within the bioactive substrate where humidity remains stable and food sources are abundant.
Temperature
- Ideal Range: 72–82°F
- Tolerable Range: 65–85°F
Humidity
- Ideal Humidity: 75–95%
- Prefers a consistently humid environment with damp retreat zones, a moisture gradient, and low to moderate ventilation with steady airflow.
- This species tolerates higher humidity levels better than many commonly kept bioactive isopods.
Favorite Foods
Primary food sources: Decaying hardwood, leaf litter, and decomposing wood, with oak and magnolia leaves being readily consumed.
Favorite supplemental foods: vegetables like squash, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, and peas.
Preferred protein sources: Bug Grub, Repashy Morning Wood, dried shrimp and krill, fish flakes, bee pollen, and Arcadia Custodian Fuel. This species also benefits from consistent calcium availability through cuttlebone, eggshells, or SoilCal Plus to support healthy molting and colony growth.
Favorite Woods & Botanicals
Cork bark flats, hardwood bark, magnolia leaves, lotus pods, palm leaves, seed pods, and cholla wood provide shelter, grazing surfaces, and additional food sources. Moisture-retaining botanicals help create stable microclimates that support natural burrowing behaviors and long-term colony success within a bioactive terrarium or vivarium.
Best Substrate
For optimal health and long-term colony success, house this species on The Bio Dude's Terra Isopoda Substrate layered over Terra Fauna or Terra Flora depending on enclosure type. This combination creates a nutrient-rich bioactive substrate with excellent moisture retention, microbial activity, and long-term food availability ideal for tropical bioactive habitats.

How to Help Them Thrive in a Bioactive Habitat
To help Venezillo parvus thrive in a bioactive habitat, provide deep leaf litter coverage, multiple cork bark hides, soft botanicals, and consistently humid areas throughout the terrarium or vivarium. This species benefits from stable isopod humidity requirements, low disturbance, and abundant decomposing organic matter within the bioactive substrate. Because they reproduce more slowly than dwarf white isopods, allowing colonies time to establish before introducing heavy predators is highly recommended. When established in a humid bioactive enclosure using Bio Dude substrates and botanicals, Venezillo parvus serves as an effective clean-up crew and detritivore for tropical terrariums and vivariums. The Bio Dude is happy to offer Isopod Habitat Kits and Isopod Culturing Kits to help your bioactive isopods establish and thrive!
