Trichorhina tomentosa

Dwarf White Isopod, Dwarf White, Tropical White Isopod

Difficulty level: Beginner

Last updated 5/18/26 by Josh Halter

Endemic To / Natural Range

Trichorhina tomentosa is native to tropical and subtropical environments where it naturally inhabits warm, humid areas rich in decaying organic matter. In the wild, this species is commonly found within moist leaf litter, decomposing wood, and organic debris where stable humidity levels support their fossorial lifestyle. Due to their subterranean tendencies, they spend much of their time burrowed within the bioactive substrate where moisture and food sources remain consistent.

Ideal Temperatures

  • Ideal Range: 72–82°F
  • Tolerable Range: 65–85°F

Humidity Requirements

  • Ideal Humidity: 75–95%
  • Prefers a consistently humid environment with damp retreat zones, a moisture gradient, and low to moderate ventilation with steady airflow.
  • This species tolerates higher humidity levels better than many commonly kept bioactive isopods and performs exceptionally well in tropical bioactive habitats.

Favorite Foods

  • Primary food sources: decaying hardwood, leaf litter, and decomposing wood, with oak and magnolia leaves being especially beneficial.
  • Favorite supplemental foods: squash, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, peas, and springtail diets or nutritional yeast.
  • Preferred protein sources: Bug Grub, Repashy Morning Wood, Repashy Bug Burger, dried shrimp or krill, fish flakes, and Arcadia Custodian Fuel. Consistent calcium sources such as cuttlebone, eggshells, or SoilCal Plus help support healthy molting and rapid colony growth.

Favorite Woods & Botanicals

Cork bark flats, hardwood bark, magnolia leaves, lotus pods, soft seed pods, sphagnum moss, and cholla wood provide shelter, food sources, and moisture-retaining microclimates. These botanicals help support natural burrowing behaviors and long-term colony success within a bioactive terrarium or vivarium.

Best Substrate

For optimal health and long-term colony success, house this species on The Bio Dude's Terra Isopoda Substrate layered over Terra Fauna or Terra Flora depending on enclosure type. This nutrient-rich bioactive substrate provides excellent moisture retention, microbial activity, burrowing support, and long-term food availability ideal for tropical bioactive habitats and clean-up crew populations.

How to Help Them Thrive in a Bioactive Habitat

To help Trichorhina tomentosa thrive in a bioactive habitat, provide deep leaf litter coverage, cork bark hides, soft botanicals, and consistently humid areas throughout the terrarium or vivarium. This species benefits from stable isopod humidity requirements, abundant decomposing organic matter, and minimal substrate disturbance. Due to their parthenogenetic reproduction, Dwarf White isopods reproduce rapidly once established and can quickly form dense clean-up crew populations within tropical bioactive setups. Their strong appetites and subterranean habits make them excellent detritivores for breaking down waste within bioactive substrates while remaining largely hidden beneath the surface. When paired with Bio Dude substrates and botanicals, this species thrives as one of the most effective bioactive isopods available for tropical terrariums and vivariums. The Bio Dude is happy to offer Isopod Habitat Kits and Isopod Culturing Kits to help your bioactive isopods establish and thrive!
