  • Clean fecal
  • Healthy body score
  • Normal activity and behavior
  • No retained eyecaps or stuck shed

Defining traits:

  • These inquisitive and active snakes are one of the smallest pythons in the family Antaresia
  • They make excellent pet pythons and are remarkably beautiful with notable coloration.
  • This species also boasts black and orange eyes which is always an attention-grabber.

Care at a Glance

Beginner to Expert:

  • Great for beginners due to their usual docile temperament and forgiving nature when it comes to temperature/humidity gradients.
  • Hardy, predictable and smaller size makes them great for beginners.

Biological Niche:

  • Native to the Northeast area of Australia
  • Nocturnal
  • Semi-arboreal
  • Thrives in multi layered habitats

Groups vs. Non-groups:

  • We have successfully kept adults together during the breeding season.
  • It’s recommended to keep them alone and to only keep in pairs when breeding.
  • There are notations of cannibalism with Antaresia but we have never experienced this behavior at the Bio Dude.

Vivarium Size and Specs:

  • Single animal: Neonates and yearlings can thrive in an 18” cube or a 20 gallon long habitat. Adults thrive in a minimum of 40 breeder (36” x18”), but a 4’x2’x2’ is recommended for inquisitive and active species.
  • Groups: A pair can be kept in nothing smaller than a 4’x2’x2’.
  • Set up as an semi-arid savannah bioactive habitat.
  • We have excellent success with a 70% Terra Firma X 30% Terra Sahara. This creates the rocky yet loamy, wood-dense substrate with burrowing and microclimate opportunities.
  • Rock slabs, cork, and driftwood for hides and thermal zones. This species highly benefits from at least 1-2 larger minerals in their habitat.
  • Due to their climate, be sure to use plenty of dense biodegradeables, as a Sugar Cane Bagasse, Colombian Cacao Leaves, Palm Bark and cork bark pieces. Arid springtails are recommended with Powder Blue Isopods. For neonates up to 6 months, do not utilize any isopods. Due to their small size babies can be predated upon via the isopods with more protein-hungry species.
  • Open basking areas with sheltered retreats
  • Good cross-ventilation and strong seasonal light cycles

Temperature:

Humidity:

  • General ambient: 40%, depending on season. Humidity spikes throughout the day are imperative for this species (especially in the morning). Spikes can go as high as 60% for short periods of time. Be sure there is always a very humid microclimate available in the habitat at all times.
  • Light evening misting can help support microclimate diversity without oversaturation

Diet:

Spotted Pythons are carnivores. We recommend feeding frozen/thawed rodents of appropriate size.
