Species Overview

Common Name: Borneo Eared Frog, File-eared Frogs
Scientific Name:  Polypedates otlophus
Size: When shipped, the frogs will be at least the size of a silver dollar.

Adult size: Adults can reach between 3” (male) and 4.5” (female).

Sex: various

Lineage: Dude-bred! These frogs are captive-bred from our colony of unrelated Borneo Eared Frogs.

Defining Traits

  • Appearance: Cryptic bark-like patterns with large, alienesque eyes.
  • Keeper level: Their easy care and peaceful natures make them ideal for beginner keepers.
  • Temperament: Social and peaceful frogs with bold temperaments. They will often be found occupying the canopy.
  • Biological niche: Nocturnal, become active at dusk with energetic climbing and jumping.
  • Native Range: Endemic to the island of Borneo. They inhabit the canopy of tropical rainforests. 
  • Can be kept in groups if ample space is provided.

Care at a Glance

Vivarium size and setup basics

  • A group of 2 to 4 individuals can be kept in an 18”x18”x24”
  • Provide sturdy wood pieces and a lot of plants with broad leaves and sturdy stems, bromeliads are an excellent option.
  • Leaf litter and microfauna such as tropical springtails and isopods.
  • Good cross-ventilation and strong seasonal light cycles

Temperature

  • These frogs can be kept at an ambient temperature of 65-75 F. 
  • Temperatures over 80 can be dangerous.

Humidity

  • General ambient: 60-70%
  • Humidity can be achieved and maintained by misting a few times a day.
  • A dish of freshwater should be provided at all times to maintain their hydration.
  • Ensure water is dechlorinated.

Diet

  • Borneo Eared Frogs are insectivores. Offer a rotating, varied menu:
    • Soft bodied insects such as crickets, roaches, flightless fruit flies. 
    • Feeder size should not exceed the distance between their eyes.
    • All feeders should be gut loaded and dusted with powdered supplements
