Beginner to Expert? This species can be considered a beginner level gecko. While they are very quick and require a large, arboreal habitat - they are very forgiving to temperature and humidity swings.  They can do great in small groups (limited to one male, or an Alpha that allows for other smaller males with enough space) which makes them amazing terrarium subjects. A heavy clean up crew population is needed as these geckos are very active and create more waste than other commonly kept species.  This species is very similar to the Tokay Gecko when it comes to temperament.

Size:

  • 8–10 inches total length as adults

Biological niche:

  • Insectivorous w/ occasional nectar treat
  • Crepuscular
  • Primarily arboreal, they love cork bark tubes and broad leaved plants
  • Acrobatic, intelligent geckos that are very good jumpers
  • Not afraid to bite or display territorial behavior if stressed

Native range

  • Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam)

Group vs. Non-group

  • Best kept solo or as a carefully managed male/female pair in larger enclosures
(Not recommended to house multiple males together).  Fun Fact: We have success at the Bio Dude with hatching eggs in habitat and allowing babies to live with adults. This has worked great for us, but its also likely as the parents recognize them as offspring!

Terrestrial vs. Arboreal

  • Semi-arboreal (utilizes both vertical and horizontal space). If you give them a 400 gallon habitat, they will utilize every inch of that habitat.

Vivarium Size

  • Minimum: 18” x 18” x 24” for a lone gecko. For a pair, a 2' x 2' x2' is the minimum size. If you are going with a troop, a minimum of a 3'x2'x4' is recommended. They require lots of space.

  • Do not keep babies in anything smaller than an 12" x 12" x 18". This size habitat will only last a few months, as they grow very quickly.

Temperature

  • Daytime ambient: 75–82°F

  • Basking area: 85–88°F

  • Night drop: 70–75°F

Humidity

  • 60–80%

  • Daily misting recommended, with proper airflow to prevent stagnation

  • Mist king systems go a long way with this species, they LOVE misting systems!
