Natural Habitat & Behavior

In their native Brazilian and Guyanese rainforests, Theraphosa stirmi inhabit deep burrows in tropical lowland regions with high humidity. They are accomplished burrowers and will create extensive tunnel systems in their enclosure. This species is known for its defensive hissing behavior, produced by rubbing specialized hairs on their legs together to create a loud warning sound. While generally calmer than T. blondi, they can be defensive when threatened and possess urticating hairs that they readily flick. They are voracious feeders with massive appetites and will readily take down large prey items including insects, small vertebrates, and other appropriately sized food.

Care Requirements

• Enclosure: Large terrestrial setup with at least 6-8 inches of substrate for deep burrowing; provide a large hide or cork bark
• Temperature: 75-82°F with slight nighttime drop acceptable
• Humidity: 75-85% with good ventilation; keep substrate moist but not waterlogged
• Feeding: Large crickets, roaches, or appropriately sized insects 2-3 times weekly for adults; known for massive appetites
• Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced due to size, urticating hairs, and specific humidity requirements
