    Species Overview

    Common Name: Majorcan Midwife Toad, Mallorca Midwife Toad
    Scientific Name:  Alytes muletensis
    Size: When shipped, the frogs will be at least the size of a quarter. 

    Adult size: Adults can reach between ¾ inches (male) and 1.5 inches (female).

    Sex: various

    Lineage: These frogs were captive-bred from a trusted source.

    In-house testing/treatment:

    Defining Traits

    • Appearance: Small stature, large dark eyes, and a tannish body that is covered in dark spotting.
    • Keeper level: Their easy care and peaceful nature make them ideal for beginner keepers.
    • Temperament: Small and peaceful frogs. They are social and prefer to live in a colony. Male Majorcan Midwife Toads will collect and fertilize eggs from the female as she lays them. He will keep the eggs on his thighs until they hatch; at which point he will deposit the tadpoles in water.
    • Biological niche: Nocturnal, become active at dusk with energetic climbing and jumping.
    • Native Range: Endemic to the Spanish island of Mallorca. They inhabit the canopy of tropical rainforests. They inhabit rocky and sandy islands. They will prefer a habitat using pea gravel and sand rather than typical substrates.
    • Can be kept in groups if ample space is provided.

    Care at a Glance

    Vivarium size and setup basics

    • A group of 2 to 3 individuals can be kept in a 12" x 12" x 12". Up to six can be kept comfortable in a 18" x 18" x 12".
    • Aquarium pebbles or pea gravel should be used as the primary substrate.
    • Provide lots of shelter and hiding opportunities. Cork flats and coconut huts are good options for this.
    • Epiphytic aquarium plants such as anubias, buce, and crypts can be used as well as tropical air plants.
    • Leaf litter and microfauna such as tropical springtails. We would not recommend isopods in this set up.
    • Good cross-ventilation and strong seasonal light cycles

    Temperature

    • Majorcan Midwife Toads can be kept at an ambient temperature of 65-75 F. 
    • Temperatures over 80 can be dangerous. 

    Humidity

    • General ambient: 60-70%
    • Humidity can be achieved and maintained by misting a few times a day.
    • A dish of freshwater should be provided at all times to maintain their hydration.
    • Ensure water is dechlorinated.

    Diet

    • Borneo Eared Frogs are insectivores. Offer a rotating, varied menu:
      • Soft-bodied insects such as crickets, roaches, flightless fruit flies. 
      • Isopods and bean beetles can be offered occasionally.
      • Feeder size should not exceed the distance between their eyes.
      • All feeders should be gut-loaded and dusted with powdered supplements
