Welcome to The Bio Dude!
Common Name: Living Stones, Pebble Plants, Rock Plants, Living Rocks
Scientific Name: Lithops spp.
Hardy desert dwellers that come in a wide (and wacky) variety of shapes and colors! Very hardy and slow growing, with only occasional moisture needed, sometimes just a few waterings a year!
-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals:
Small reptiles that prefer arid environments. Note: Medium or large animals can easily crush this slow-growing plant, and even with a smaller animal, a large scratch can easily scar or completely kill it.
Not ideal for large or burrowing reptiles that may crush delicate foliage.
Excellent for arid plant-only terrariums or as a potted houseplant!
Bio Dude Substrates:
The Bio Dude's Terra Sahara (for arid or desert setups)
Soil Depth:
Minimum 2 to 3 inches to allow proper root establishment. A depth of 3 to 5 inches can help accommodate their long taproots.
Thrives in shallow, well-draining bioactive soil or in small gravel/finely crushed granite.
Lighting:
Bright indirect light (or full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting).
Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — colors may bleach.
Humidity & Misting:
Prefers low humidity (0% - 40%).
Water very sparingly! These plants need water just a few times per year! Do NOT water if the plant looks firm, plump, or is actively splitting. If following a natural growth cycle, then water in late spring or early summer once the top of the plant starts to wrinkle or old leaves are gone, in order to encourage blooming.
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:
Ideal range: 68–80°F (20–27°C).
Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).
Best placed in the mid to lower zones of the terrarium, away from other plants that could overshadow it.
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:
Non-toxic to reptiles, amphibians, and most pets.
While not meant as a food source, accidental ingestion may causemild stomach irritation or vomiting in animals.
Pot Size & Packaging: A single 2" potted lithop plant is shipped in the pot wrapped in paper.
