Welcome to The Bio Dude!
Common Name: White Bird of Paradise, White Bird-of-Paradise, Wild Banana
Scientific Name: Strelitzia nicolai
Not to be confused with the more well-known, and more modest-sized, orange bird of paradise, the white bird of paradise plants have a less colorful bloom that doesn't occur as frequently. However, they are strong and hardy plants with great architectural form and can get quite large.
*These plants can eventually get quite large (up to 30 feet/10 meters), and even regular pruning will not deter their large root system. These plants are best for only extremely large custom enclosures, or for outdoor enclosures in tropical environments where temperatures rarely drop below freezing! Can also be used as a very large potted houseplant in atriums or large solariums.*
-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals:
Reptiles and amphibians of all sizes from tropical and temperate climate zones. Excellent for tree frogs and other arboreal (tree dwelling) reptiles and amphibians.
Bio Dude Substrates:
*Please note that since these plants are suited only for very large enclosures, large amounts of substrate will eventually be needed.*
The Bio Dude's Terra Flora (for tropical or rainforest setups)
The Bio Dude's Terra Fauna (for slightly drier but still humid forest environments)
The Bio Dude's Terra Firma (for temperate terrestrial environments with only occasional humidity spikes)
Soil Depth:
Deep soil of several feet is needed proper root establishment.
Lighting:
Moderate to high indirect light (or full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting) preferred; can also tolerate high direct light in some circumstances.
Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — leaves can scorch easily.
Humidity & Misting:
Prefers high humidity (50% – 70%) but can tolerate less than 40% in certain circumstances.
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:
Ideal range: 60–80°F (20–27°C), but can take up to 90 degrees.
Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:
Mildly toxic to humans, dogs, and cats if ingested. The tannins and other irritants in the leaves can cause mild nausea, oral irritation, and drooling.
Because reptiles and amphibians do not typically consume them, they are generally considered safe for them.
Always monitor new plants for pesticide residues before adding to enclosures (rinse thoroughly or propagate from clean cuttings).
Pot Size & Packaging: A single 5" potted bird of paradise plant is shipped in the pot, wrapped in paper.
