Welcome to The Bio Dude!
*These plants require solid aeration but high humidity spikes throughout the day. Over watering and stagnant air will quickly kill this plant.*
Rex Begonia is available in a few forms. If you have a color choice let us know and we will do our best to accommodate!
Common Name: Rex Begonia
Scientific Name: Begonia rex cv.
These mound-forming plants can get large and bushy with age, with colorful, somewhat-fragile leaves. Beautiful when grown properly! Their very thin, fibrous root systems are shallow, but allow for maximum water absorption with adequate humidity. Some rex begonias can be tuberous, forming a succulent rhizome that creeps along the substrate.
-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals:
Small frogs and other amphibians, along with some small reptiles, from tropical and temperate climates.
Bio Dude Substrates:
The Bio Dude's Terra Flora (for tropical or rainforest setups)
The Bio Dude's Terra Fauna (for slightly drier but still humid forest environments)
Soil Depth:
Shallow to moderate with proper drainage.
Can also be mounted in high humidity conditions.
Lighting:
Low to moderate indirect light (or low-level full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting) preferred; can tolerate high light but colors may bleach.
Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — leaves can scorch easily.
Humidity & Misting:
Prefers high humidity (50% – 100%).
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:
Ideal range: 60–80°F (20–27°C), but can take up to 85 degrees.
Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:
Non-toxic to reptiles, amphibians, and most pets.
While not meant as a food source, accidental ingestion is harmless.
Always monitor new plants for pesticide residues before adding to enclosures (rinse thoroughly or propagate from clean cuttings).
Pot Size & Packaging: A single 5" potted begonia plant is shipped in the pot, wrapped in paper.
