Welcome to The Bio Dude!
Common Name: Baby Tears
Scientific Name: Pilea depressa
-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals:
Small reptiles and amphibians that prefer humid environments, such as dart frogs, tree frogs, geckos, and anoles.
Excellent ground cover for invertebrates like isopods and springtails in bioactive setups.
Not ideal for large or burrowing reptiles that may crush delicate foliage.
Bio Dude Substrates:
The Bio Dude Terra Flora (for tropical or rainforest setups)
The Bio Dude Terra Fauna (for slightly drier but still humid forest environments)
Can also adapt to Terra Firma if provided with consistent moisture.
Soil Depth:
Minimum 2–3 inches to allow proper root establishment.
Thrives in shallow, well-draining bioactive soil with leaf litter on top.
Lighting:
Moderate to bright indirect light (or low-level full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting).
Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — leaves can scorch easily.
Humidity & Misting:
Prefers high humidity (60–90%).
Light misting daily or every other day helps maintain lush growth.
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:
Ideal range: 68–80°F (20–27°C).
Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).
Best placed in the mid to lower zones of the terrarium where it can creep along the substrate or over rocks and wood.
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:
Non-toxic to reptiles, amphibians, and most pets.
While not meant as a food source, accidental ingestion is harmless.
Always monitor new plants for pesticide residues before adding to enclosures (rinse thoroughly or propagate from clean cuttings).
Pot Size & Packaging: A single 2" potted pilea plant is shipped in the pot wrapped in paper.
