-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals:
Small-to-moderate sized reptiles and amphibians that prefer humid environments, such as dart frogs, tree frogs, geckos, and anoles.
Bio Dude Substrates:
The Bio Dude's Terra Flora (for tropical or rainforest setups)
The Bio Dude's Terra Fauna (for slightly drier but still humid forest environments)
Can also adapt to Terra Firma, if provided with consistent moisture.
Soil Depth:
Lighting:
Moderate to bright indirect light (or low-level full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting).
Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — leaves can scorch easily.
Humidity & Misting:
Prefers moderate to high humidity (40–80%), can take higher for brief periods.
If soil dries out for prolonged periods, crotons will wilt or drop leaves, and recovery times will be lengthy.
Light misting daily or every other day helps maintain lush growth.
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:
Ideal range: 68–80°F (20–27°C), but can take between 60 and 85 degrees.
Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).
Croton can grow to be large shrubs or trees, but can easily be pruned to maintain desired height. When mature, croton can form deep taproots, but in a terrarium setting, the roots will typically remain noninvasive.
Can be used as a hardy groundcover if kept at a shorter height, or can be used as a taller background planting if allowed to mature.
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:
Being members of the family Euphorbiaceae, crotons contain a white, sticky sap that can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested.
Pot Size & Packaging: A single 3" potted croton plant is shipped in the pot, wrapped in paper.
