What You'll Need to Add

• A clean-up crew (isopods + springtails) suited for arid biomes
• Arid-appropriate live plants (e.g., Haworthia, Aloe, Sansevieria)
• Proper lighting, UVB, and a temperature gradient appropriate for your species

Enclosure Size & Substrate Depth

This kit is sized for a standard 40-breeder (36" × 18" footprint). Fill to a minimum of 4–5 inches of substrate depth — this allows the clean-up crew to thrive below the surface and gives burrowing species room to dig. If your enclosure is larger or you prefer deeper substrate, order an additional bag of Terra Sahara. If your enclosure is smaller than a 40-breeder, this kit will yield excess substrate.

Initial Setup: Step-by-Step

1. Layer your substrate: Pour the full 36-qt bag of Terra Sahara into the enclosure. Distribute evenly to achieve 4–5" depth across the floor print.
2. Inoculate with BioShot: Sprinkle BioShot evenly over the top layer of substrate and lightly mix it into the top 1–2 inches. This seeds the microfauna colony that will process waste and keep the substrate healthy.
3. Add leaf litter: Distribute cacao and banana leaves across the surface. Tuck some banana leaf strips vertically into the substrate to improve aeration and create natural air pockets.
4. Create a moisture zone: Place sphagnum moss in one corner or inside a hide to establish a localized humidity retreat — important even for desert species during shedding.
5. Plant and decorate: Add live arid plants, cork bark, rocks, and hides before introducing your animal.
6. Cycling period (2–4 weeks recommended): Before adding your reptile, allow the enclosure to cycle. Lightly mist the substrate once and let it dry down. This gives the BioShot microfauna time to establish. Watch for fungal blooms — these are normal and will resolve as the colony matures.
7. Introduce your clean-up crew (isopods and springtails) ideally before or at the same time as your animal.

Ongoing Bioactive Maintenance

• Spot clean only: Remove solid waste visible on the surface as needed — the bioactive colony handles the rest below.
• No full substrate changes required in a healthy bioactive setup. The clean-up crew continuously processes organic waste.
• Moisture: Lightly mist one corner every 2–4 weeks or as needed to support the isopod colony. The rest of the enclosure should remain dry.
• Leaf litter: Replenish cacao and banana leaves every 1–3 months as they break down.
• Plants: Trim as needed. Dead plant matter becomes food for the clean-up crew.
• Check-up: Every 6–12 months, gently top-dress with a thin layer of fresh Terra Sahara if the substrate level drops noticeably.
