Terra Firma Bioactive Kit 40 breeder

Product Description

Everything you need to build a self-sustaining bioactive habitat for monitors, snakes, tortoises, and other terrestrial burrowing reptiles — in one complete kit, sized for a standard 40-breeder (36" × 18" footprint).

What's Included

  • x1 36-qt bag of Terra Firma substrate — The Dude's handcrafted temperate/tropical blend; holds deep burrows and tunnels while supporting live plants and a thriving clean-up crew
  • x1 Compressed Sphagnum Moss Brick (150g) — expands significantly when hydrated; use as a surface moisture layer or inside hides
  • x2 Cacao Leaves — natural ground cover that breaks down into organic matter for the clean-up crew
  • x2 Banana Leaves — layer into the substrate for aeration and natural air pockets
  • x1 36-qt BioShot — beneficial microfauna inoculant to seed and establish your clean-up crew colony

What You'll Need to Add

  • A 40-breeder enclosure (36" × 18" × 18" minimum recommended)
  • A clean-up crew (isopods + springtails) suited for tropical or temperate biomes
  • Live plants appropriate for your species' humidity needs (e.g., pothos, snake plant, bromeliads)
  • Proper lighting, temperature gradient, and UVB appropriate for your species

Enclosure Size & Substrate Depth

This kit is sized for a standard 40-breeder (36" × 18" footprint). Fill to a minimum of 4–6 inches of substrate depth — essential for burrowing species like monitors and tortoises that need to thermoregulate below the surface. If your enclosure is larger or your species requires deeper burrow depth, add an additional bag of Terra Firma. If your enclosure is smaller than a 40-breeder, this kit will yield leftover substrate.

Initial Setup: Step-by-Step

  1. Hydrate your sphagnum moss: Submerge the compressed moss brick in water for 10–15 minutes until fully expanded. Wring out excess water until damp but not dripping.
  2. Layer your substrate: Pour the full 36-qt bag of Terra Firma into the enclosure and distribute evenly to 4–6" depth.
  3. Inoculate with BioShot: Sprinkle BioShot evenly over the top layer of substrate and lightly work it into the top 1–2 inches. This seeds the microfauna colony responsible for breaking down waste.
  4. Add leaf litter: Spread cacao and banana leaves across the surface. Press banana leaf strips vertically into the substrate to improve aeration and create natural structure.
  5. Add sphagnum moss: Place hydrated sphagnum moss in a corner, under a hide, or across one side of the enclosure to establish a moisture gradient.
  6. Plant and decorate: Add live plants, cork bark, hides, and hardscape before introducing your animal.
  7. Cycling period (2–4 weeks recommended): Before adding your reptile, allow the enclosure to cycle at proper humidity. Watch for fungal blooms during the first 1–2 weeks — these are normal and indicate microbial activity. They will resolve as the colony matures.
  8. Introduce your clean-up crew (isopods and springtails) ideally before or alongside your animal.

Ongoing Bioactive Maintenance

  • Spot clean only: Remove large solid waste visible on the surface as needed. The bioactive colony handles breakdown below the surface.
  • No full substrate changes required in a healthy bioactive setup.
  • Moisture: Maintain humidity appropriate for your species by misting one side of the enclosure regularly. Terra Firma holds moisture well and drains effectively to prevent anaerobic pockets.
  • Leaf litter: Replenish cacao and banana leaves every 1–3 months as they break down into the substrate.
  • Plants: Trim as needed; dead plant matter is food for the clean-up crew.
  • Top-dress: Every 6–12 months, add a thin layer of fresh Terra Firma if substrate depth decreases noticeably from biological activity.
