Cyclocosmia latusicosta — Vietnamese Oreo Butt Trapdoor Spider

Nature occasionally produces something so bizarre, so perfectly engineered, that it looks like it was designed by an artist rather than evolution. Cyclocosmia latusicosta, the Vietnamese Oreo Butt Trapdoor Spider, is exactly that. The abdomen of this extraordinary mygalomorph is truncated into a hardened, disc-shaped plug — intricately patterned with radiating ridges and grooves that look uncannily like an Oreo cookie. This disc isn’t decorative. It’s a shield.

When threatened, Cyclocosmia retreats into its burrow and uses the armored disc to cork the entrance, presenting predators with an impenetrable wall of chitin. It is one of the most remarkable defensive adaptations in the entire spider world — and one of the most visually stunning.

Why Collectors Love This Species

  • The disc abdomen — a hardened, intricately patterned plug used to seal the burrow entrance; no other spider looks like this
  • Extreme rarityCyclocosmia latusicosta is virtually never available in the US hobby; a genuine trophy specimen for serious collectors
  • Conversation-stopping appearance — the Oreo-like abdominal disc is instantly recognizable and endlessly fascinating to anyone who sees it
  • Fascinating burrowing behavior — a dedicated fossorial species that constructs deep, silk-lined burrows; rewarding to observe and set up
  • Old World mygalomorph — no urticating hairs; calm and deliberate in movement
