Welcome to The Bio Dude!
Discover the fascinating Thelyphonus sp from Thailand, commonly known as the Thai Vinegaroon or Whip Scorpion. This remarkable arachnid features a robust, armored body and a distinctive whip-like tail that gives the species its common name. Despite their scorpion-like appearance, vinegaroons are completely harmless to humans and possess a unique defense mechanism—they spray acetic acid (vinegar) when threatened, giving them their memorable name. Native to the tropical forests of Thailand, these nocturnal predators make captivating display animals for invertebrate enthusiasts.
Thelyphonus species inhabit the leaf litter and beneath logs in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. These nocturnal hunters use their powerful pedipalps to capture prey such as insects, worms, and other small invertebrates. Despite their intimidating appearance, they are gentle creatures that prefer to flee rather than spray their defensive acid.
Provide a terrestrial enclosure with deep substrate (3-4 inches) for burrowing, hiding spots such as cork bark or half logs, and maintain high humidity (75-85%). Temperature should be kept between 75-80°F. Mist regularly to maintain moisture and provide a shallow water dish. These nocturnal creatures prefer darkness and will spend most of the day hidden.
