Common Name: Liriope, Super Blue Liriope, Lilyturf, Liliy Turf, Lilyturf Grass, Lily Turf Grass, Super Blue Liliyturf, Super Blue Lily Turf, Monkey Grass, Super Blue Monkey Grass
Scientific Name: Liriope muscari ‘Super Blue’
Super Blue Liriope is a hardy, attractive grass-like perennial featuring deep green, strap-shaped foliage and seasonal spikes of violet-purple flowers. Its dense, upright growth habit makes it an excellent choice for adding natural-looking grassy cover and texture to larger bioactive enclosures. It can get up to 20" high and forms a deep, clumping root system. Its long, dark green leaves can take on an almost bluish tint and creates excellent coverage and hiding places for smaller animals.
-Care Recommendations By The Dude-
Best for These Animals:
Almost any sized animal from temperate climates where a sturdy, grass-like plant is desired.
Bio Dude Substrates
The Bio Dude's Terra Fauna (for slightly drier but still humid forest environments)
The Bio Dude's Terra Firma (for temperate terrestrial environments with only occasional humidity spikes)
Soil Depth:
Moderate to deep with proper drainage.
Lighting:
Most light levels suitable (or full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting). This variety can tolerate partial shade but generally develops fuller, stronger growth when provided with brighter lighting.
Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — leaves can scorch easily.
Humidity & Misting:
Prefers moderate humidity (40% – 60%), but can take lower under certain circumstances, and with periodic deep watering.
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.
Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:
Ideal range: 70–80°F (21.1–26.7°C), but can take between 60 and 85 degrees.
Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).
Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:
Non-toxic if consumed, though excessive consumption of either the leaves or berries can cause mildly upset stomach or possible vomiting.
However, these are typically used for ornamental, not edible, purposes, and reptiles and amphibians do not typically eat them.
Pot Size & Packaging: A single liriope is shipped in an approximately 6" nursery pot (possibly a 1 gal pot, depending on root size), wrapped in paper.
